Sept. 13, 2013 Those who teach, can do BC professor Ralph Hamlett runs for city council position By Olivia Fawcett Managing Editor B revard College professor of political science Ralph Hamlett announced that he is running for the position of alderman on the Canton, North Carolina city council. When asked why he chose to run for this position, Hamlett replied, “I was asked by members of the community to run. The politics in Canton is as divided and contentious as we see in national politics. No matter what the mayor proposed, the aldermen would vote against it on certain issues. I was asked to run to bring my voice to council... lam running against five other people.” Lovers of Hamlett’s communications classes need not worry. If Hamlett wins this election, he will not sacrifice his teaching position. “It will probably inform my teaching in political science courses, particularly American government, and courses such as political communications,” Hamlett said. “For years I have talked about running for office. I have assisted people in campaigns and congressional races as well at the national state level. I worked and taught in politics, but it’s much easier to teach in politics than it is to actually do it.” A shocking fact for the Brevard College community: Despite his outgoing persona, Hamlett is actually an introvert.
